History of Burnmoor
Burnmoor Stud was started in 1988 to breed versatile Cobs to perform under saddle with the initial purchase of two foundation mares: Rossway Bronwen (Rossway Black Jack x Pwllceffyl Olwen by Nesscliffe Selwyn) and Flemish Queen. (Penllwynuchel Taran x Hewid Jane by Geler Cardi Model). Sadly in June 2004, Flemish Queen had to be put down at the age of 19 having produced 11 foals (see Successes page)
Our second stallion, Lodor William (Cippyn Rhodri x Lodor Wendy by Pennal Flying Comet) proved the most influential siring jumping stock from a number of different mares.
This is a small stud, producing between two and four foals a year, but we have a good achievement record since rarely a week goes by without a mention of at least one of the progeny in the report listings of Horse and Hound. We have an unequalled record in M & M workers at HOYS, having had one and two qualifiers at six out of the last seven years (2000 to 2006 inclusive). On four of those occasions, Burnmoor Cobs were the highest placed Welsh Cobs in the competition. Our cobs are highly successful in all levels of competion from Riding Club to County Shows, from the BSJA Scottish Junior Championships to the Horse of the Year Show.
Our young stallion for 2002 - 2004 was Grovewestparc Milligan (Penn Fleet x Marl Marigold). He has produced some large show-quality stock, including the colt Burnmoor Merlyn Mawr, who is stud stallion for 2007. Ross Rhodri (Ormond Rhys x Ross Rhosyn), a section C stallion standing at the stud in 2004 & 2005, produced some exceptional quality stock, including the stunning Burnmoor Llywnog Coch (see For Sale page).
The stud is situated on the Yorkshire/Lancashire border at an altitude of 600 feet, on the edge of wild open moorland. Our foals are handled from day one, taught to lead, be caught and be groomed and foot-trimmed. They are hardy and tough from their environment, and yet have good stable manners from being individually stabled from weaning.
